The unstoppable force that is Trinidad and Tobago’s 2010 Carnival season has indeed picked up a rapid pace. Excitement builds every weekend as those two glorious days of masquerading quickly approach.
In a season where so many cooler fetes, concerts and all-inclusive fetes flood the calendar of events, the average party goer has to be cautious in choosing the highest value for money amongst the various parties offered per weekend. However, if one asks many local Carnival enthusiasts, they would say that there may be 100 party options but there is only “One Fete”.

New York, NY(Sonique Solutions) –Many would agree that qualifying for the International Soca Monarch Semi- Finals is no easy feat, especially for an artiste who has only been performing professionally for seven months. It takes raw talent, hard work, determination, courage and good old support from family and friends - none of which Kevin James seems to lack.
We first met Young Voice when he was preparing to ride the wave of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival 2010 season with his lyrical and energetic soca tunes. His first single entitled “Jumper Cable” was produced by Shawn “Da Ma$tamind” Noel of Ma$tamind Productions. With its beguiling chorus, the monster track had already gained a following in the U.S before it earned this young artiste a much coveted spot to compete in the International Soca Monarch 2010 Semi Finals.
So how does an artiste react to such an accomplishment knowing that there were over 300 contestants? When asked, Voice responded “I just booked a flight and started rehearsing for the big stage.” Not leaving his performance to luck, Voice rehearsed “Jumper Cable” over sixty times so that he could deliver a performance as if he was doing it for years. His preparation emphasized on keeping the energy together delivering his lyrics in a clear manner and using the stage to his advantage.
On the night of the competition, performing at his lucky # 7 out of 89 spots, Voice took the stage with a very fitting mechanic jumper accessorized by a jumper cable attached with the positive on the right side and negative on the left side as the song dictates. “I came to Jump Start all the woman waistline to get them in gear for Carnival”, stated Voice. He added, “There was plenty of shocks to go around for everyone that night and I borrowed some electricity from the crowd.”
Although Voice did not qualify for the finals, in retrospect he recalled how his overall performance was amazing, as according to him “It was the first big performance of my career thus far.” He got the crowd involved and in return got the electricity that he needed to continue “jump starting.” Attention was definitely paid as Voice earned a very much sought after media interview, combined with high regards from fellow members of the entertainment fraternity as well as spectators on hand after his notable performance.
So what’s next for this budding Soca Star whose offerings for Carnival 2010 also include the lyrically inclined “Carnival Come Back”, the pulsating “To de Stadium” and chipper “It’s Jouvert”? In his own words “Performing, promoting, vocal lessons, recording, collaborations and touring to spread the music and culture. This is only the beginning of my career the best is yet to come”.
The fruits of Young Voice’s diligence and labour have already begun to bear and manifest in the forms of major performance opportunities. He will soon be sharing the stage with the heavyweights of T&T’s Carnival 2K10 such as International Soca Monarch/Road March champs JW and Blaze, Iwer George, Tallpree, Denise Belfon and Patch at the first big Soca stage show in NYC.
Emanating from the rich southwestern border of Trinidad, touching us with a sweet lyrical and pulsating music is none other than Kevon Joseph aka. KK……..
KK’s humble place of abode originally was Rancho Quemado until he migrated to Tobago at age seventeen (17).From there on he started singing to relieve the stress of his family. Chanting, rapping and singing were inevitably a natural way of life for him. In 2006, he started visiting studios, the first being ‘Another Level Recording’ doing minor training. For the next year and a half, he continued training to develop his voice and breathing techniques.
The following year he earned his first gig in Bellegarden, Tobago at a beach party. From there on he realized that a more serious effort had to be made towards his music. In light of this, he recorded his first song, ‘Falling in Love’ which was specially edited for his wife. He gained great exposure through this song, therefore it motivated him do other songs. Within a few weeks KK began receiving requests on this hit to be preformed for promotional use. However KK’s largest performance thus far was on the 14th January 2009 at the ‘Bmobile Soca Spree’ where he opened the show.
In 2008, KK was on fire releasing three hott singles songs, two Soca hits (Wine on Me) and (Wok up Yuh Bumper) and one Reggae (Hold you Tight Tonight). ‘Wok up Yuh Bumper’ was featured by a local artist, Kekere. This was a big breakthrough for KK since he released two other songs a Soca ‘Feeling Yuh Vibes’ and a Reggae’ Close To You’ earlier this year. These songs were popular on the airwaves and were highly requested on radio stations. Other fellow artistes were also eager to do combinations / compilations with him.
As ‘Wok up Yuh Bumper’ became even more famous Kevon decided to put his years of training to the test. In 2009, Radio Tambrin (92.7fm) out of Tobago held a show which featured the first top ten artistes on the island and was also featured on live television. Kevon was astonished since he was one of the top ten. Being a multitalented artist KK learned to separate his music from his private life and is now currently working on a music video and other songs.
